Merry xmas!

"Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year of having, in spirit, become a child again at christmas time."

--Laura Ingalls Wilder

I hope everyone had an amazing Christmas, spent with not too, too many crazy relatives. For the first time in quite a while I had a low key family/extended family Christmas where the food was fattening and delicious and the jokes and stories kept on coming.

To die by your side, well the pleasure, the privilege is mine

The Smiths are amazing. "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" is the most heartbreaking depressing song that you can't help but put on repeat. There music isn't about that love you lost, or that love you still have--it's more about that love you have never known, the kind you envy and want more than anything in the world.

He was a most peculiar man

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
My neighbor Marty passed away early this week. Not much is known about the cause of death, or who he really was as a matter of fact. It's strange though that the people we see day in and day out, whether it's close friend or even a lonely old doctor who sits up on the computer all night long for days on end, are fragile and sometimes leave us much too soon. I have seen too many people lose the ones they love this year especially and it is never expected. Love is a strange thing and if you don't love the people in your life to the fullest extent that you can, you may regret it when they are gone. Take some time and push past all of your stupid grudges and ask yourself, "if these people died today, would I have talked to them enough, loved them enough and gotten to know them enough?" The heart is also a very misunderstood thing, would you feel fulfilled if yours stopped beating tomorrow?

Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Last night I dreamt,
That somebody loved me,
No hope, no harm,
Just another false alarm.

Last night I felt,
Real arms around me,
No hope, no harm,
Just another false alarm.
So tell me how long,
Before the last one?
And tell me how long,
Before the last one?

The story is old,
I know but it goes on,
The story is old,
I know but it goes on.

--The Smiths

If I could draw something remotely similar to this I would be extremely happy.

People Are Strange

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
People are strange when you're a stranger,
Faces look ugly when you're alone.
Women seem wicked when you're unwanted,
Streets are uneven when you're down.

When you're strange,
Faces come out of the rain.
When you're strange,
No one remembers your name.
When you're strange,
When you're strange,
When you're strange.

Ain't it the truth though? It's been an incredibly weird week in which God/Godess/the Great Spirit/the Universe/Whatever has been throwing me some curve balls.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Yes, let's celebrate the time that the Native Americans were wiped out by disease and slaughter and now families take time out of their busy schedules to make fattening food and grit their teeth as the relative they havn't seen in four years brings up painful family secrets.

No matter how many times I watch Dazed and Confused I never ever get tired of it. I especially love that it has been on TV nonstop the past few days...

I have lived in the Palisades Highlands for twelve years and while it is very beautiful, I am tired of the same old routine. There is no public transportation to leave the Highlands and it's two miles to the nearest bus stop. I am trapped on a beautiful mountainous island.

God dammit. I need a car.

Sinatraville, 1967

My grandparents Iris and Douglas Viltz at the age of 28 and 29. Times have definitely changed since the 60s, but my grandparents look pretty much the same today.

Sea of Gold

Finally! It's is finished and I am pretty happy with the outcome. As the painting developed, it began to have a sort of Pandora's box theme. The disembodied (or maybe decapitated) head floating in the water for me represents Pandora and the box. The black mass writhing out of her mouth represents all things evil in the world. The golden background represents that the sun is up and the world is still bright, but not for long if the eye less Pandora is allowed to blindly spread hatred and disease throughout the world. The woman on the right looks to you, the viewer.

Not-So-Pure

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

What more can be said, The Virgins rock. When I was in New York I didn't listen to a whole lot of music, but when I did, it was all about One Week of Danger, Private Affair, and Rich Girls. I was into them a while back, but its been very recent that I started to listen to them again and my old feelings of adoration for this band came back in a flash. For those of you crazies who have not heard this genius band, go forth now and listen to them. You will not be disappointed.

Salvador Dali is by far my favorite artist. All of his art exudes genius with just a touch of insanity.

A Familiar Topic

Set in the 1980s, This Is England is about the life of a young boy as he is transformed from a bullied and troubled child, into a Neo-Nazi follower. He is tought by an older harcore skinhead to distrust and hate the "Paki bastards" who immigrated into England throughout the years. This film is extremely dark but also extremely eye opening. Even though it takes place nearly 30 years ago, these problems of racism and violence are still a chilling reality. Plus they have British accents, its a must see.

When I see films like these, I want nothing more than to travel! I have a sort of love-hate relationship with the U.S.A. and I desperately wish to journey and experience life as a traveler on a foreign shore. Italy, France, Spain and so many more destinations overseas are beckoning me. It is strange though, my newfound lust for travel, due to the fact that the closest I have gotten to an out of country expediation was a trip when I was very young to Baja California (its techinically Mexico).

Eye For Color

Françoise Nielly grew up in the South of France with an architect father. Her eye for color is so unique I instantly fell in love with her style. In my own sketches, I find that eyes are very important. If the subjects eyes apear dead and lifeless, the artwork can often seem pointless to me. Nielly's subjects eyes show not only the subjects soul, but also the artists soul. These paintings convey so much emotion, yet they also are filled with mystery.

Now, how cool is this? It's clearly not a real number, but I just thought this was extremely clever. The only problem is, what if your number changes?

Nitty Gritty

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Fight Club is a cinematic masterpiece--but that's just my opinion. In a movie, I can usually name a single star who stole my heart and made the film a favorite for me. That just isn't so with this movie. I could say that Brad Pitt's performance as the deranged and seductive Tyler Durden captured the epitome of reckless behavior, or that Helena Bonham Carter as Marla Singer delightfully took the cake with her dark witty delivery, or I could say that Ed Norton stole the movie with his portrayal of the soft spoken Narrator turned aggressive fighter. The truth is, they were all amazing and there is no conceivable way I could possibly choose just one.

I love those twisted love stories...

Devoid of all fireworks and friends, in the past 4th of July has been rather gloomy for me. That was definitely not so this year. Lianna and I started off the day at the Palisades parade where we met up with our friend Eunice. From that point on, spontaneity was the game. We met up with some more people as the day progressed and eventually ended up at the Pali stadium where we laughed and talked and watched the fireworks. It was definitely a 4th of July to be remembered.
